We moved into a beautiful semi-furnished house in Jakarta in October 2014, and spent several weeks looking scouting the city for home decor at good prices. We wanted authentic local design – teak etc, and good prices.
The lay of the land appears to be:
(a) Department stores / Malls with western imported overpriced and low quality items (Gandaria City – Informa / Ace / etc)
(b) Boutique furniture / decor stores in Kemang (south Jakarta), which have some beautiful pieces, but are massively overpriced (aka London prices) (Klots, Rumah Lunar, etc)
(c) Specialist furniture malls which on the whole sale garish renditions of mock 16th century French / Italian glitzy gold tatter, at silly prices (Plaza Mebel).
….so we were beginning to think we might need to make a trip to Bali / Jepara / the towns where the beautiful javanese furniture is produced, and ship a load back.
….until we came across Galeri Pot on Kemang Timur, which produces individual pots and lamps at very reasonable prices (c. USD 40 for most of the medium/large sized pieces we bought).
Really enjoyed the rustic look. Each piece is hand made and individual.
We ordered two of the red pots pictured in the foreground for conversion to bedside lamps (i think c. IDR 600k including conversion to lamp).
